Huawei reportedly looking to turn to Russia’s Avrora OS as Android’s replacement

Chinese technology giant Huawei will reportedly begin discussions this summer with officials at Russia’s communications ministry in a bid to determine if it could use Russia’s Avrova (Aurora) operating system. This was disclosed on Friday by RIA news agency which cited a Russian deputy communications minister as saying.
This is against the backdrop of reports that Huawei is already in an advanced stage of deploying its own HongMeng OS (ArkOS). The moves are all aimed at mitigating the effect of the US trade ban on the company will when effective, will prevent all US companies from selling US technology to Huawei.
The Chinese giant has already forecasted a loss of up to $30 billion over the next two years as a result of the ban. Huawei’s founder and CEO, Ren Zhengfei hinted that Huawei’s overseas cellphone sales will drop by 40%. Presently, the US gave a 90 days respite for Huawei but if it elapsed without the US and China reaching a trade deal, it could go into effect. The ban will see companies such as Google withdraw Android license from Huawei which means the companies future phones will not use Google’s Play Store, Play Protect (the in-built malware scanner on Google Play), Security Updates and more on its phones. Also, the phones will not have other apps like Google Maps, YouTube and more.
So, Huawei will be keen on decimating Google’s monopolistic empire at this time, in order to end its reliance on US companies to run one of its largest businesses. The self-developed Hongmeng OS is said to come in August or September this year with a worldwide release in the second quarter of 2020 but those are rumours.
Aurora OS is a Russian-made mobile operating system based on the open-source Sailfish OS Linux distribution developed by Finnish company Jolla. Sailfish isn’t the most popular mobile operating system out there; in fact, it doesn’t show up on the radar of Android versus iOS. However, its focus on privacy and security has won over many users.
